I just want to let you all know that December 8th is now PRETEND TO BE A TIME TRAVELER DAY.

I found this out today, when searching for suitable material to use for the flyer for my debut DJ night, Dec. 14th, which also happens to be the 'Futurist Ball and Fashion Show' night at the club.
Steampunk lovers, start your steam engines...

"Why the "Pretty Bird Woman House" Needs a House
The Pretty Bird Woman House is a women's shelter on South Dakota side of the Standing Rock Reservation. It opened in January of 2005.

As a new shelter, it has been struggling financially. It was in danger of closing in May, when the net roots got together and chipped in for operating funds to tide it over until it received a 3-year Federal grant in the fall.

Unfortunately, the building in which the shelter was housed was vandalized by thieves who smashed through exterior walls so often that it became unsafe for anyone to stay there. This is why the Pretty Bird Woman House lost its house. To add insult to injury, somebody torched the building the day after they moved out."

Here's a link to the rest of the story:

If you claim Native American ancestry, no matter what tribe, or if you value the rights of women and children to live in peace - I do urge you to donate to this cause. Even if it's just skipping lunch today, and donating $5 instead - they need it.

If enough money is raised, they can acquire faciliities directly across from the police station, eliminating the ongoing issue of vandalism due to limited police access.

Quick poll for the men (and I'm sorry to be a bit vulgar here, but I'm dead serious- as part of the interior design for the office building I'm working on, I'm picking out urinals today for the men's bathroom, and I need your help!)

Waterless Urinals.

You may or may not have heard of them before, but- what is your first impression of the concept?

If you walked into a restroom today and... did your business, but didn't see any sort of flush handle or automatic wash-down thingy, would it freak you out? Would you even think twice about it? Would you shrug and walk away?

They can save up to 45,000 gallons of water per year, per urinal.
Now what is your impression of them?
did it change at all?

Still have more questions, like, "what about the smell"? I did.
Go here to see an animated diagram of how the trap works (yes, it's SFW!)

Now having seen the diagram, has your impression changed?

If it looked like this or this would you feel more inclined to accept the concept because it looks "sleeker"? Or would the non-traditional design freak you out even more?

I am trying to build a more sustainable building, but this concept is freaking me out a little.
I think I have been convinced that this could work.
But I am not the one who has to pee in it, or train the janitor how to clean it. Seems easy enough to train, but then....hmm.
I don't want the entire male component the departments moving into this building when it's finished to be... grossed out at me, for such a weird concept.
I'd like to build "green" if possible, but Americans and our bathrooms, well... that's just an area that's difficult to feel like you can modify, even if it is where a lot of water waste occurs... y'know?

You are one of the good ones, lady-- I'm so glad I met you. You make many lives richer just for being on this planet, and I hope you stay around for a good long while.

What would you put in a drink called "Karate Victory!"?

To my caring, creative, awesome friend: I hope you are surrounded by dear friends and lots of fun, and may you have many happy returns! *BIG HUG* :)

is there a word, in english, latin, or any other language you know, that means something like, "edge of light" or ... more specifically, like, where the edge of a shadow touches or turns into light?

Attention Otaku:

Ever wondered what would happen if a bunch Japanese musicians made friends with a Scottish kid from Florida and decided to make a Celtic-Japanese band?
Well... now that I've brought it up, you do, right?

Wait to no longer to satisfy your curiosity!
Check out Overground Acoustic Underground here for some new ear snacks.

They're not half-bad. In fact, they're more than half-good...

Have any of you ever done Graphic Design freelance work?
If so, what did you usually charge for it?
Did you charge by the project or by the hour?

Any advice is appreciated, and comments will all be screened for privacy.

I am asking because this guy with the website company wants me to do work for him, and he wants to know how much I charge, and I have no clue what to tell him.

I need some help, y'all.

Got a lady here in the office who wants to buy a laptop. She needs a lean, mean, graphics machine. It needs a powerful processor, but I don't know what that means anymore- it's been so long since I've bought a computer that I haven't thought about specs in a few years, and I'm sure what's hip/cool/functional today is not what I remember.

So. If you were going to recommend a kickass laptop to me, what would you say?
This thing needs to run large memory-hog, graphics-intensive programs (it's for an architect, so think AutoCAD 2008, Photoshop/Adobe creative suite, etc. 3-D Studio Viz or other 3-D rendering and basic animations, etc.)
I need stats on what is considered "good" computer guts these days.

It's convenient that I've gotten this request today, because I've just been thinking about considering a new computer for myself, and I would have pretty much the same requirements that she does.
The only difference is, she wants to buy it like, tomorrow so she can take it back to Argentina, and I can wait another few months.

I seriously applaud this woman, but I really hope she still has a job tomorrow. And to that end, I am going to write a letter to the network right now telling them what a great job she did preserving the integrity of the journalism field, and how I'm more likely to tune into her newscast now!

I've been avoiding watching this series since it came out because I desperately wanted to see it- which I know sounds weird- but I missed the first several episodes and I refused to jump in in the middle of the story! I was totally prepared to wait till it all came out on DVD and just start from the beginning.
But NBC.com totally has all the episodes online! free! I just watched the first one...

Ahh! SupaaHiro! *dies of cuteness attack*

(yeah, yeah, go ahead and laugh at my totally delayed reaction)

500 years' worth of female portraits in Western Art.
The transitions are really smooth and it kind of sucked me in. Thought it was nifty, had to share. :)

I've added a few people to my fList today who I totally should have added ages ago, but it's been in this weird fuzz of confusion where the "to do" keeps slipping my mind or I wasn't 100% sure of the correct handle, or I didn't even know the person was on LJ to begin with. However, going to faire this past season reminded me of all the people I still need to add- I'm woefully behind and attempting to remedy that!

So, a big welcome to [livejournal.com profile] kingwamba, [livejournal.com profile] pheylan, [livejournal.com profile] seahawk_capt,[livejournal.com profile] smokin_man, [livejournal.com profile] darkblood777 and [livejournal.com profile] aamon!!

I feel like there are a lot of faire folks I would friend but I'm not aware of their LJ handles...hmmm... will have to stay on the lookout for that...

I am making this entry public so that everyone has fair use of this information, in hopes that any resulting wank will be minimized.

1. Okay, here are the usernames I recently deleted from my list:

This is not a slight against any of you; obviously you're all fine people or I wouldn't have been interested enough to friend you in the first place. I simply never see you around, or have forgotten why you friended me/I friended you in the first place, or your journal has been deleted (such as in idan's case. Love you, but you're probably not even reading this now.)
Please, no drama. If you feel I've deleted you in error, and you'd like to stay, just comment, and I will add you back. If you don't care much either way, feel free to unfriend me too, and there will be no hard feelings, promise.

2. These are the users I almost unfriended (or haven't friended yet), but I wanted to give you the chance to say something first. Please comment in the next week or so and tell me you want to stay or tell me something about who you are/remind me how you know me.
If you don't care to stay, that's totally fine too. Again, no offense meant or taken. :)
