yinshubackup: (as if!)
(tried to post last night, but for some reason it's not showing up. So here's one more try:)

Happy Wednesday, everyone. Wednesday is usually a good day for me at the hotel school because I am enrolled in Wines 430, the most coveted class at the university and it meets once a week for two hours on wednesday afternoon.

It's not as glamourous as it sounds; the class is crowded, and we (all 700 of us) sit in the auditorium balancing cafeteria trays on our knees, with our notepad, wine rating sheet, several wine glasses and a spit cup, and take lecture notes and rate the wine samples we are given and try to build our smell/taste vocabulary. We try about 5 or 6 wines in the course of the class- they pass the bottles down each row and we each pour a jigger in (the bottles have those funny little tops) and we sniff and swirl and slurp and spit, which is really funny to listen to in an auditorium of 700 people.
We keep our wine rating sheet at the end of every class, to build a sort of "wine journal" of wines we've tried, what they look, smell, and taste like, and how well we liked it, and what the avg. price point is, etc.

I try to look at it as: no matter how crappy the day has been, there is at least wine at the end of it.
And now, my good day can be good for you too (if you like wine):
Today I thought I should start sharing in my journal a short blurb about what we learn each week in class, and review some of the wines we sampled. Those who are interested can follow along, and maybe get ideas of new wines to try if any of the suggestions pique your interest.

And, even if nobody else actually cares, at least I'll be getting practice writing wine reviews, which I'm sure will help my on my upcoming prelims for this class. So I guess my readers will just have to suffer.
So, without further ado, I will start with today, 10/01/03:

(disclaimer*: everything below is from my notes or opinions- if you want to become a sommelier, i can't take you there. These are merely the ramblings of a learning college student.)
