My sister-in-law is Jamaican, and she has a vast amount of relatives and friends in NYC, so whenever she has parties, they all come (bearing curried goat and jerk chicken), and it's fantastic. I've only been down there once, when I was 15 for their wedding, but I loved it. The way of life was so laid-back. It's pretty normal to slam on your brakes to avoid the chickens and goats wandering through Kingston. (Also to not hit the guy in front of you, who just passed a friend coming in the other direction and they both stopped to have a chat, holding up both lanes of traffic.) If you do hit an animal, though, it's customary to keep it, in compensation for the damage to your car.
