Gothity Goodness
Jan. 4th, 2004 02:11 pmIn the adamant words of a character from As Good As It Gets, I am "goin' out, like people do!"
I told my mother this morning. I'm going to the club tonight. And I'm leaving early. (well, early being if I'm on the road by around 7:30 ish)
I had a strange dream about my mother last night.
She kept wanting to be with me, spend time with me, learn more about my world. She really almost seemed like she was going to behave and actually listen to me and just try to understand for once. She really wanted to go to lunch with me, and she had been very curious to see this "Church" club that I'm "always running off to" (like, the 2 or 3 times a year I actually get to go) so I thought I would just take her there for lunch, since I didn't think she could handle it at night.
We got there, and it looked strange to me, with tables and chairs where I expected to see dance floors. There was more lighting than usual, in tones of blue and green, and the whole place seemed more like some post-industrial undersea grotto-restaurant thing with "goth-lite" waitstaff milling about the floor. The musak was definitely Goth, though, and as loud as it would be for dancing.
My mom was pretty uncomfortable, and I knew she was rethinking her choice to come here, but there was nothing I could do now. She asked for it. The waiter sat us at a table we didn't like, so we asked him to re-seat us. This only caused further arguments, since I wanted one with a good view of the club, but she wanted one away from the loud music. We finally got re-seated at a little banquette lining the very back wall, and although she was still complaining about the music, we picked up the menus and started to order.
All of a sudden, a chanting cheer swelled up through the crowd. I looked around, and noticed that all the other customers were of the neo-puppy vampire-goth variety, and they were cheering in anticipation, a deep, throbbing-heartbeat-rising-faster kind of chant, and I rolled my eyes and thought, ohhhh nooo! I looked at the ceiling and saw the sprinkler system, and knew what was about to happen.
I only had time to read my mom's confused and fearful face before the "blood" came raining down all over us and everyone and everything, just like in the movie Blade.
Of course, that was it. Terrified and shaking with anger, she stormed out, and I followed. She whirled around and said, "what WAS that???"
I wanted to explain that I knew it was only water dyed red, and they were reenacting this popular movie, and it was a vampire thing and vampires were only one part of the goth genre, in fact more of a crossover really, but all I could say in answer was "Blood." Then immediately I was like "shit! that's not what I meant. It was-"
but she freaked out and wouldn't hear me, it was too much for her to stomach, she fled and I chased her all over the city, but I couldn't catch her or finish explaining.
Then I woke up thinking, note to self: continue exercising caution when sharing "quality time" with mother.
Anyway, I'm coming out to night, and definitely NOT bringing my mom. *dry grin* but I actually might be bringing my brother David, who recently turned 18. I don't think Goth is really his thing, nor ever will be, but he's curious to go at least once, and he's not one to act stupid in the presence of his elders or gawk rudely at people wierder than him. So, he might be coming along. If we can both find somthing to wear. Damn that I left EVERYTHING, even my good emergency fabric scraps, in Ithaca.
That'll teach me to pack 30 minutes before my bus comes.
I'm off to the thrift stores and Jo-ann's Fabrics.
